My thoughts: This book was excellent! I fell in love with the main characters, since they are well written and there is such a variety of characters, which makes me excited about this series. The mystery is well written, with many things going on, and had me guessing til just about the very end. This is a great start to a new series. I highly recommend Oath of Honor if you are looking for a well written mystery to enjoy as the weather turns cold.

My thoughts: I loved this book! It would of helped to read the first book in the series by Cara, since the story is referenced, but it does stand alone decently, since it's about a different character than the first book. I like that it is a legal mystery, without being burdened with too much legalese. I like that there are two mysteries going on with the story, which really helps the tale move quickly. There is also a lot of depth to it, with dealing with an abusive marriage. Cara handles the story well. I highly recommend this one!

My thoughts: This book was interesting, to say the least! It is an engrossing story of three girls who's lives have been cut short and what happened leading up to their tragic deaths that affects those left behind. I thought it was a unique story, though a bit disturbing. Marybeth does a great job of keeping the reader engaged until the very end.
This book is geared towards high schoolers, with it's language and some of the subject matter.

My thoughts: This is the first of Rachel's books I have read, though I have eyed some of her previous series! This one lost me a bit at times, with all the legalities of the story, though she does a good job of not letting the story get too carried away with details. It is an interesting mystery that involves big pharma and several different view points. I love that the reader gets to see both legal sides of the case! I look forward to reading more by this talented author!

Ultimately, kids will learn how to make their own case for God’s existence.

My thoughts: This is an excellent book to have middle school and young teenagers read! I love the format of the story, how it ties a modern mystery in with evidence of the universe pointing to the existence of God. I found the book engaging as it moved back and forth between the two. This series is an excellent one to hand to kids and have them learn to solve mysteries, whether large or small, on their own. Two thumbs up!

My thoughts: I haven't read any of Janice's previous stories, but my sister has raved about them, so I picked this one up. It was excellent! I love how the story tackles social issues, like the recent problems with attacks on police officers. I was a bit horrified by how much of a mess one blogger made in this story, but I think I was even more horrified that things like this story actually happen.
The mystery and suspense of the story are driving, which makes it hard to put down! I love how we get glimpses into other sides of the story. Two thumbs up! I look forward to reading more of Janice's books!

My thoughts: This book was the perfect conclusion to the series! I enjoyed the fun combination of mystery and art that this series brings to readers. It is such a fun trip into the cultured world surrounding art! I also loved Serena and her chance at love. This one is an excellent series to pick up if you love art, mystery, or are just looking for a engrossing read. Two thumbs up!

My thoughts: This book was a little bit confusing at first, since it jumps around a lot to catch the reader up to speed on what happened leading up to Carrie's death. After the first few chapters though, things do start to come together so that the reader has a clear picture of what makes Salem think that her sister's death wasn't an accident.
While I didn't really click with Salem, I did think this was an excellent story, since it deals with social issues like strikes, fair wages, and gangs. The mystery side of the story was quite suspenseful too! This is an excellent debut novel with a lot going for it. I look forward to reading more by Nikki!

My thoughts: I love that this book has so much going on with the story! It gives us a little taste of what happened after WWII was fought, which I found to be interesting. I found it interesting for the story to include a German immigrant, since some of my ancestors were Germans (though they came over before the World Wars) who tried to keep quiet about being German. Filled with mystery and intrigue, this story is a wonderful addition to any library!

How Classic Movies from the 1940s Made Their Way in My Latest Novel

One thing I loved about writing my post World War Two novel was my main character’s passion for movies. Alice Brighton and her late husband loved to go to movies on Friday nights. Now, even after the war made her a widow, Alice still loves movies and compares everyone she meets to a movie character.



Of course for Alice, all these wonderful classic movies and movie stars and a part of her culture, but for me, it was so much fun because I love classic movies. In the novel, Alice compares her landlord to Cary Grant. Cary Grant is one of my favorites. After starring in movies like Suspision, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Notorious, Grant was one of the biggest stars around in 1946 when Alice’s Notions takes place. My favorite Cary Grant movie wouldn’t be made until a few years later. An Affair to Remember, released 1957, with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is one of my all-time favorites.



At one point in the novel, Alice thinks back to when her late husband always said she reminded him of Judy Garland. Garland would have been twenty-four at the time, just a bit younger than Alice, but she became a big star in her teens. She began acting at two years old when she debuted as Baby Francis and sang Jingle Bells. After playing in various roles including a few movies with Mickey Rooney, Garland had her big break in The Wizard of Oz. She went on to star in a ton of movies and had a thriving singing career until she committed suicide in the 1960s. One of my favorite Judy Garland movies released in 1945 during the war was The Clock. The Clock was about a woman who met and fell in love with a GI on leave. Their romance was intensified because they only had the weekend before he was shipped out again for the remainder of the war. This movie must have been in Alice’s mind since she had lost her husband shortly after the movie came out.



During Alice’s Notions, Alice goes on a date to see the movie, The Postman Always Rings Twice, starring Lana Turner and John Garfield. It was released in 1946 and was considered scandalous at the time because the two main characters have an affair and murder her husband. The main theme of the movie is you can’t get away with your sin. The truth will be revealed. In Alice’s Notions, the truth being revealed is also a main theme.



So you may be wondering what classic movie Alice’s Notions reminds me of. Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn was released in 1963. In that movie, Hepburn is being pursued and doesn’t know who she can trust. The movie has light hearted intrigue, suspense, and romance just like Alice’s Notions. Alice, also, doesn’t know who she can trust.

My thoughts: I think this may be my most favorite of the Nikki Boyd Files! The story starts off running when Nikki is in a plane crash and is left to wonder if she was imagining the passenger on the plan next to her. As the suspension mounts during the search for a missing witness, Nikki races the clock and a killer bent on silencing the witness once and for all. I liked that there was a lot going on, so the story's pace is fast. I loved the twists and turns! I only hope that this is not the end of the series!

My thoughts: In a lot of ways, this book was not at all what I expected! The story drew me in right away, and I love that there is so much going on with the mystery! I love how Piper develops as a character, as she is thrown out of her comfort zone and left without her best friend. She's a delightful heroine who is strong and feminine at the same time.
I'm hopeful that this one will turn into a series.;)

My thoughts: Amish fiction has kind of exploded in recent years, so it's easy to over look this one and think that it is just another story along the same lines. But it's not, since it deals with a young Amish woman who's family had to relocate due to a stalker going to far. The suspense and character development keeps the story going and makes one look forward to the next book in this series! The secrets and mysteries in this story make the reader long for the next book to already be out, as you finish the last page!

My thoughts: This mystery wound up being a lot of fun to read! I hadn't read anything by Joanie before, so I was excited to try this book out. I will be sure to pick up some of her other stories now, since this book is well written and I liked that there is a lot going on with the mystery and story. Two thumbs up!

This book was fun to write because I anchored the story in my sweet little town of Madison, Georgia. I wasn’t raised in Madison, but I’ve called it home for much longer than any other place I’ve ever lived. While growing up in the big city of Memphis, Tennessee, I had definite plans for my future. All I ever wanted was to “marry a country boy and live in the country.” The Lord heard the desires of my heart and gave me what I wanted … a country boy, born and raised here in Morgan County on a dairy farm.

After we married, I adopted Madison as my home, and I love it so much that I wanted to feature some of the fun spots in Madison as the backdrops for the scenes in my books. I hope when you read through the pages of my book, you will get an idea of what a sweet little town Madison is and enjoy reading about Lexi and Drew and how they let God guide them in discovering that murder CAN be “for the Time Being.”

My thoughts: I enjoy this series immensely, since it is a fun set of mysteries that is just enjoyable! I really like the time period it is set in, England in the 1920-1930's. The characters are interesting, as they develop over the course of the series. I liked the themes in this one and the chance to visit the Moors through it.;) I would love to go in person someday!
After I started this one, I realized that I missed the 4th one, which I will have to remedy.
I highly recommend this delightful mystery!

Murder on the Moor Spotlight

Mystery Awaits on the Mysterious Yorkshire Moors

My review: This is a fun story that explores the idea of three Amish children who went missing over twenty years ago who have grown up in the "English" world, with no memory of where they came from. When Margo winds up in a small Amish/Mennonite community, she starts to feel like she is caught in the Twilight Zone. With the help of a handsome deputy and a zany cast of characters, Margo gets to the bottom of the mystery.
The humor of this story is light hearted and reminds me of Jeeves and Wooster. This story is a fun mashup of humor and mystery, a simple life in contrast to that of a pop star.

The Making of “Finding Margo”

To say that my entrance into the publishing world was a tad difficult is certainly an understatement. My very first attempt at writing was centered around a middle grade book, specifically written for my son who was in the third grade at the time. After finishing that, and sending it out to all of five companies, none of whom represented middle grade, I then moved on to young adult with a little more interest sent my way, but no success story to report in the end. Not one to embrace the idea of complete and utter failure, I then tried my hand at a contemporary romance, moved on to what I assumed was a delightful regency romance, but one that turned out to be not that delightful, at least according to numerous agents, and finally landed on gilded age stories, filled with quirky heroines. That is when I finally received my very first publishing contract, which then saw me catapulted into the very weird world of publishing. After completing the second gilded age story of my two-book contract, I found myself with some time on my hands as I waited to see if anyone would read my stories, which might then result in an offer of additional book contracts. As I waited, I decided I might as well keep writing, so decided to try another contemporary story, although my agent at that time suggested I try to write an Amish book since she had numerous requests from publishers for those specific books.

Because my writing voice is not what anyone might consider normal, I really didn’t believe I’d be able to do justice to an authentic Amish story.



Because of that, I settled on the idea of writing a contemporary romantic suspense, being a huge fan of that genre. I had a vague notion of exploring a theme centered around a dog walker who might stumble on a body while walking her pack of dogs, or perhaps have a storyline that centered around a makeup artist who witnessed a crime while setting out her makeup for a client, but those ideas went straight away when I pulled out the vacuum one fine day.



Vacuuming, as well as staining the deck, cleaning the shower, and power-washing the garage, are my go-to activities when I need to get the muse working right before I start a first draft. On that particular day, as I pushed the vacuum around the house, I suddenly had the most intriguing idea – an idea that started off with two delightful little words…What…and…If.



That was all it took for a premise to begin festering through my mind, a fester that grew into this – What if three Amish children were stolen straight out of their beds, never to be seen or heard from again until… Now here’s where it gets interesting. I decided to have a woman by the name of Margo Hartman, an international superstar no less, stumble into this small Ohio town quite by accident, and…she happens to bear an uncommon resemblance to an Amish woman who lives in this town. To add an addition sense of intrigue, someone immediately begins trying their very best to kill poor Margo.



By the time I was done vacuuming, the storyline for “Finding Margo” was firmly cemented in my mind, which translates into Jen had no choice other than to write the story. However, before my agent at that time found a home for the manuscript, I signed another contract for more gilded age books, which meant I did not have the time to commit to what was certainly going to have to be a three-book series since, well, there were three Amish children who’d gone missing.



Fast forward around five years and I found myself a little ahead of schedule at exactly the right time. There was a new publishing house in town, my current agent remembered me talking about this quirky book I’d written long ago, and as luck would have it, I found the flash drive that’s been home to “Finding Margo” for all these years.



Since my writing style has certainly changed since I first wrote Margo’s story, I ended up rewriting the entire book, and I must say that I’m still just as intrigued with the storyline as I was when it popped to mind while vacuuming what seems like ages ago. I’m just tickled to death that Margo Hartman has finally found her way out of a flash drive and onto the pages of a book. I’m hoping readers will enjoy her as much as I enjoyed writing her.

My thoughts: I love that we get the chance to return to Stoney Ridge in this book! Suzanne does a fantastic job of weaving past heroines and heros into the story, so it feels like catching up with old friends.
This book has a lot going for it! I love the mystery surrounding the strangers who come to town. It also brings up some interesting points with one character thinking of leaving the Amish world behind and another thinking to embrace the simplicity.
This is an excellent read whether you are a fan of Amish based stories or not, since there is so much going on!

My thoughts: I wasn't sure how I would like this story, since it deals with some horrible crimes. That said, I do think that Carrie handles the story well, not dwelling on atrocities.
I really enjoyed the religious side of the story, with Gwen going undercover to learn more about a serpent handling church that has lost quite a few of their members over the last year. I thought the characters were fascinating and loved learning some new things.
This is an excellent read that will keep you up late reading.;)

The Things We Knew

A tragedy from the past resurfaces in this tale of family secrets and reignited love.

My thoughts: This one will keep you up late reading, since the story has plenty of mystery and intrigue! I had such a hard time putting it down, since Lynette's memory resurfaces slowly. The plot is interesting, and I also enjoyed getting to know each of her siblings with their personal struggles brought on by how they dealt with tragedy. This story is well written; I appreciated the depth of each of the characters. A must read for mystery lovers!

My thoughts: I need to lay off the mysteries, since they keep me up way to late at night! While I enjoyed the first book in this series, I think that I liked this one even better! There were a lot of plot twists and I just couldn't believe how much Daniel and Katie had to go through before discovering who was out to get Daniel. I enjoyed the characters and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
