My thoughts: I appreciated that this book covers a variety of topics that affect the many different relationships in our lives. From friendships to those with family and spouses, this book was insightful and well written. I always appreciate when an author shares personal experiences and stories from those they have worked with to bring home their message. The author did a wonderful job of blending together personal stories, scripture, and wisdom on ways to improve our relationships. I appreciated her identifying the different ways that the unhealthy habits can hit us, since it has been easy for me to think that I don't struggle with insecurities as much, but I could really relate to that chapter! This is a wonderful book to pick up and use to help improve relationships!

I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.

United Forces

He inhaled slow deep breaths and exhaled, attempting to remain calm after this latest development. His mind battled between panic and being brave enough to plan an effective action. Obtaining information about these people on the mountain to the south would be required to ensure the safety of their newly established headquarters. The abundant cedar and pine trees concealed the house but made it more difficult for Kahn and the others to see across the mountain and valley to the next mountain using the night vision goggles. The other group members determined they must go through the surrounding woods and into the clearing for a better view. Kahn agreed.

The cold darkness of night was amplified in the thick woods surrounding the headquarters. Kahn trailed behind the other members of the Underground Book Readers a little further out of the woods. He stood very still. Raising the binoculars to his eyes, he located the potential threat; the unexpected cluster of people gathering, spreading out, then regrouping again on the side of the other mountain.

“Why do you suppose they are doing that?” Asher asked.

PURCHASE LINKS: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | BookBub

My thoughts: I loved this story of secrets and second chances set in the Nashville music scene! Both Scarlett and Jake have their share of secrets. When Scarlett and Harmony are thrown into Jake's path, two very different worlds collide. Can they work through the past and discover if they have a future?
I love the music scene, since both my husband and I are musicians. I also really enjoyed how the author takes a common trope and throws some unexpected twists in there, making it entirely her own. This is a delightful story with well written characters.
I received this story from Just Read. This is my honest review.

Excerpt:

Robin put on her sunglasses as they headed toward the park across the street. "Ready for the official tour now?" she asked. "Whenever you're ready." "This is Veterans Memorial Park. My Grandpa John Chaplin's name is on the World War II memorial wall here. He was in the Army and was wounded in Europe. I think it was in France. After he recuperated, he worked in intelligence at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. until the war ended. He worked on codes and communications." "Sounds like a smart man." "He was. He was intelligent, clever, compassionate, and kind. I was blessed to have him as my grandfather. His name is also shown on the Korean War memorial wall over here." They walked further into the park to see the Korean War wall. "He served in both wars?" Jeff asked. "Yes. In the Korean War he was stationed in South Korea and saw some combat. Fortunately, he wasn't wounded in that conflict," Robin said with a slight smile. "I'm in awe of anyone who saw combat in not only one, but two wars!" Jeff replied. "It's pretty amazing, isn't it?" she asked. "Definitely amazing. Maybe more like astonishing since I don't come from a military family. Is this all right?" Jeff gestured to a bench engulfed with shade. "Yes, it's nice and cool here." They both sat down and then Jeff handed Robin her ice-cold smoothie. She slid the straw through the lid and took her first sip. "Delicious. Thanks." "You're welcome. Tell me more about your family." Jeff sat back with his legs stretched in front of him and began sipping his smoothie through his straw. "My grandparents raised me from the time I was fourteen. My mother died of colon cancer after a lengthy battle. My dad was an emotional wreck after she died. We appeared on his parents' doorstep in Bonita Creek one July afternoon about three months after Mom's death. He asked his parents to look after me while he tried to 'find himself.'

Excerpt: “Don’t be afraid,” a voice whispered in her ear. She squinted her right eye open slightly. A young man was standing next to her, holding her hand lightly in his. Smoke rash had spread all along the left side of his face, causing one eye to swell nearly shut. His skin was dry and scabby, even to her calloused hand. And when he spoke, she saw how his cracked lips bled. “Let us pass.” The young man had a clear voice. The guards stumbled to the side, bewildered. The young man, still gripping her hand, gently but firmly pulled her past them. She realized as they walked that the man had an uneven stride, with a strong limp in his right leg. They continued along the footpath to the quarry until Acadia suddenly realized that they were still holding hands and snatched hers away. “What were you thinking back there? They could’ve just as easily killed us both!” She avoided his eyes and settled for glaring at his dusty sandals instead. “I’m not a prisoner. They have no authority over me.” He turned his head right and left, gazing at everything around them as they walked. “If you’re not a prisoner, why are you here?” She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “To rescue you.” She laughed in his face. “Did all Lucien’s talk of ambassadors go to your head? Only a fool would come to Gehenna of their own free will.”

In Love's Time

In the summer of 1918, Captain Marcus Weatherford arrives in Russia on a secret mission, with a beautiful ballerina posing as his fiancée. Marcus searches for the Romanov tsarina and her son--who both allegedly survived the murdering Bolsheviks--and the information behind an allied plot to assassinate Lenin. But Marcus's sense of duty battles his desire to return home to Clare--his actual love.

Hospital orderly Clare Danner still suffers from Marcus's betrayal and now fears losing her daughter to the heartless family who took Daisy away from Clare once before, but only Marcus can provide the critical proof needed to save her daughter.

Faced with danger and unexpected circumstances, can Clare trust Marcus, or will he shatter her world yet again?

My thoughts: After reading some of the author's previous books set during WWI, I was thrilled to have the chance to read more about Marcus and Clare. I love that the story is told from multiple viewpoints, with seeing Marcus' important mission from his side of things, but then also seeing the toll that the secrets he must keep takes on his relationship with Clare. I have to say, I personally found Clare a bit immature and annoying the beginning, but it was worth it to stick with the story, since she grows less annoying as the story proceeds.
I love the suspense and mystery surrounding the mission and the fallout from it. The story reminds me, just a little bit, of While You Were Sleeping, since Marcus struggles to remember recent times when he sustains an injury. This book works as a stand alone, but can also be appreciated if you read the other books By Kate Breslin set during WWI.
This is a delightful story to pick up and enjoy! I received this book from Bethany House. This is my honest review.

All the Lost Places

When all of Venice is unmasked, one man's identity remains a mystery . . .

1807
When a baby is discovered floating in a basket along the quiet canals of Venice, a guild of artisans takes him in and raises him as a son, skilled in each of their trades. Although the boy, Sebastien Trovato, has wrestled with questions of his origins, it isn't until a woman washes ashore on his lagoon island that answers begin to emerge. In hunting down his story, Sebastien must make a choice that could alter not just his own future, but also that of the beloved floating city.

1904
Daniel Goodman is given a fresh start in life as the century turns. Hoping to redeem a past laden with regrets, he is sent on an assignment from California to Venice to procure and translate a rare book. There, he discovers a city of colliding hope and decay, much like his own life, and a mystery wrapped in the pages of that filigree-covered volume. With the help of Vittoria, a bookshop keeper, Daniel finds himself in a web of shadows, secrets, and discoveries carefully kept within the stones and canals of the ancient city . . . and in the mystery of the man whose story the book does not finish: Sebastien Trovato.

My thoughts: A lot of the split time stories I have read have a part of the story set in more modern times, so it was fun to read something a little bit different with this one! I enjoyed both of the stories and getting to know the characters. The story of Sebastien was a little harder to follow, since I felt like I was missing out a bit by not understanding the culture of Venice at that time. It was interesting to learn more about the history of this fascinating city though.
Daniel was an interesting character, with his loss of ability to picture things and having once been an artist. as he seeks for answers for his employer, he also has the chance to discover the forgiveness that has been there the whole time.
This is a well written, lovely historical read that I enjoyed reading.
I received this book from Bethany House. This is my honest review.

On My Honor

Ginny Mathis was finished with nursing school and had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. With her father away, she feels duty-bound to stay and help her mother and younger sister. While working as a clerk for the Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask Ginny and others to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. So to help occupy her teenage sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity along the coast.

Timothy Elliott is no stranger to death. As a British reporter working with the M-6, he’s numb to the losses of war after two years of fighting the Germans. Maybe that’s why he volunteered for this mission—to connect with an ex-German naval officer who stole the Furor’s battle plan for the Atlantic war. When the boat giving him passage to New York is bombed near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Tim is thrown from the boat and wakes up in the care of a group of young girls.

Ginny follows her sneaky sister on a clandestine mission and discovers the shipwreck victim. Ginny knows she must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?

My thoughts: This is such a fun story about some of the history of what was happening on the home front during WWII. I enjoyed learning more about what the Girl Scouts did to help with the war effort. The story of Timothy and Ginny is a delightful one, filled with unforgettable characters and interesting facts about WWII. This is a wonderful addition to the series, though can be read as a stand alone.

I received this book from Celebrate Lit. This is my honest review.

About the Author

Multi-published author Patty Smith Hall lives near the North Georgia Mountains with her husband, Danny. When she’s not writing on her back porch, she’s spending time with her family or working in her vegetable garden.

More from Patty

Did you know that the Girl Scouts (or Girl Guides) serviced as spies on HIs Majesty’s Secret Service during World War One? I didn’t either until I picked up a book on female spies at my local Barnes and Noble. There were only two paragraphs about how the girls worked with the MI5 for the duration of the war. It was enough to get my heart pumping!

Being a former Girl Scout myself, I was amazed at what these young girls did to help our country during the war. What activities did the Girl Scouts/Girl Guides do in World War II? Anything asked of them. They organized drives for anything from fat (to make bullets) to paper, stepped into positions left vacant by men serving on the front and worked Victory gardens to provide food for their community. They did so many things, I can’t begin to name them all here. By March 1944, the Girl Scouts had provided over 15 million volunteer hours toward the war effort.

Isn’t that amazing? No wonder I had to write a book about them!
