Top ten books I read and hated but am glad I read

I went through a period in high school were I read a ton of classics, most of which I look back and think "But why?". lol.
If you would like to learn more about the book (though I am not sure why, since it's on this list!), click the image of the book. This post contains affiliate links.

1. War and Peace

2. Crime and Punishment

3. Tess of the D'Urbervilles

4. Sylvia's Lovers

While I really enjoyed Elizabeth Gaskell's other books, this one was annoying.

5. Jude the Obscure

Another depressing book. I do like some Thomas Hardy's other stories.

6. The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel

While I didn't hate this one, I was disappointed that many of the sequels didn't live up to the first one.

7. Rupert of Hentzau

I didn't realize there was three in the series, but after the Prisoner of Zenda, this one was just kind of depressing. Not at all what I was hoping for!

8. The Thief

Over all, I enjoyed the story, but I really did not care for the style it was written in.

9. Great Expectations

10. Lord of the Flies

  1. I'll be SHOCKED if I ever pick up War and Peace (although I will admit I adore the miniseries). 'Tess' seems so depressing, as do many on this list, plus I am not a classic lit reader. ;)

    1. I still need to watch the miniseries... I don't blame you, since there are so many books to read and so little time.
There are a lot of depressing stories in classic literature.

  2. Wow! I am very impressed that you've read War and Peace. I don't think I could get through that book. :-)

  3. War and Peace is one that I don't know if I'll ever be able to pick up, and I definitely won't try Great Expectations (Dickens puts me to sleep, even though I love the plot). I did however love Tess, but I completely understand why people don't. It took me an extremely long time to get through though because it was so depressing. I have Lord of the Flies on my list for this week too, but in a very different way: https://clockworkbibliotheca.blogspot.com/2018/05/books-i-dislikedhated-but-am-glad-i-read.html

  4. Great list! You fought through your way in War and Peace, thats a feat in itself. I don't think I ever would pick that one up and not just because of the éenght but I never had any luck of enjying russian literature. Thats just not my style.

  5. My gosh Lord of the Flies. Had to read that for school and was glad to be done with it. Though I wonder how differently I'd think of things now.

    1. It was interesting and I can see why it is a required book for a lot of schools.

  6. Any specific reason you hated War and Peace? I'm a masochist, so I was thinking of picking it up... :)

    1. So many battles and I needed a cast list, since they had all the names and then the nicknames or pet names on top of that.;)

  7. I haven't read most of these but I will "punish" myself one day and read them :) ... just so I can have my own opinion about them.

  8. I have tried so hard to get through War and Peace...just feel like I NEED to :(
I had also forgotten about Tess of The d'Urbervilles. I read it in high school and remember trying to figure out why in the world my beloved English teacher would assign it to us.

  9. Classics are hard! I feel guilty if I don't at least give them a chance but I don't really know why? It's not like someone is out there marking off what I haven't read and not letting me into the bookworm club. I also hated Lord of the Flies, it's on my list too :)

    1. I can relate! I feel like I'm not a real bookish person if I don't give classic literature a chance. Surely it's been around so long for a reason.;)

  10. Ugh I hated Lord of The Flies, but am not glad I read it, I would never have chosen to read it if I hadn't been made to for school.
