While I really enjoyed Elizabeth Gaskell's other books, this one was annoying.
5. Jude the Obscure
Another depressing book. I do like some Thomas Hardy's other stories.
6. The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel
While I didn't hate this one, I was disappointed that many of the sequels didn't live up to the first one.
7. Rupert of Hentzau
I didn't realize there was three in the series, but after the Prisoner of Zenda, this one was just kind of depressing. Not at all what I was hoping for!
8. The Thief
Over all, I enjoyed the story, but I really did not care for the style it was written in.
9. Great Expectations
10. Lord of the Flies
I'll be SHOCKED if I ever pick up War and Peace (although I will admit I adore the miniseries). 'Tess' seems so depressing, as do many on this list, plus I am not a classic lit reader. ;)

DeleteWar and Peace is one that I don't know if I'll ever be able to pick up, and I definitely won't try Great Expectations (Dickens puts me to sleep, even though I love the plot). I did however love Tess, but I completely understand why people don't. It took me an extremely long time to get through though because it was so depressing. DeleteGreat list! You fought through your way in War and Peace, thats a feat in itself. I don't think I ever would pick that one up and not just because of the éenght but I never had any luck of enjying russian literature. Thats just not my style.

DeleteMy gosh Lord of the Flies. Had to read that for school and was glad to be done with it. Though I wonder how differently I'd think of things now.

ReplyDeleteI had also forgotten about Tess of The d'Urbervilles. I read it in high school and remember trying to figure out why in the world my beloved English teacher would assign it to us.
I felt like I needed to in high school.;) Prove to myself that I could read any book. lol.
DeleteClassics are hard! I feel guilty if I don't at least give them a chance but I don't really know why? It's not like someone is out there marking off what I haven't read and not letting me into the bookworm club. I also hated Lord of the Flies, it's on my list too :)
