Left with no other option, fourteen-year-old Esther is forced to leave the castle for her own safety, not knowing if she will ever see her mother and father again. With only a pack of food and her faithful horse Onyx, Esther sets off on an adventure to find her mother’s people. But the enemy is never far behind, closing in on the princess who eludes them. Will she be able to make it to safety? And will she ever see her parents again?

When all hope seems lost, Esther soon finds that God never leaves His children on their own. At every turn, Esther meets friendly faces willing to help her as she strives to find a way to get back to her parents. With only her faith in God as her weapon, Esther turns back to home, determined to have the victory once and for all. But will that be enough? It seems that Esther will never see her parents in this world again. And all hope seems lost when Esther is finally captured and hidden away. It’s time for the villagers to take up arms and fight for their freedom. Will they prevail? Or will evil finally win? The true victory lies in finding a faith that is unshakable.

My thoughts: I'm always looking for good, wholesome stories for my daughter to read, or for us to read together. This one qualified! I enjoyed all the characters and the journey that Esther goes on. I appreciated the strong Christian themes in the story and how the characters develop throughout the course of the story. This is also a great story for Middle grade readers, since there isn't a romance in it. I enjoyed the writing and look forward to reading more by Sydney Witbeck!

I received this book from JustRead. This is my honest review.

Of Gold and Shadows

The shadows hold secrets darker than they ever imagined. . . .

In 1888 Victorian England, Ami Dalton navigates a clandestine dual life. By day, she strives to establish herself as a respected Egyptologist, overcoming the gender biases that permeate academia. But with a heart for saving black-market artifacts from falling into the wrong hands, she is most often disguised as her alter ego, the Shadow Broker.

After eight years in India, Oxford's most eligible bachelor, Edmund Price, has come out of the shadows to run for Parliament and is in search of an Egyptologist to value a newly acquired collection. Expecting a renowned Oxford professor, Edmund instead finds himself entangled with Ami, the professor's determined daughter. As they delve into the treasures, their connection deepens, but trouble emerges when a golden griffin--rumored to bear the curse of Amentuk--surfaces, and they're left to wonder if the curse really is at play, or if something more nefarious is hiding among the shadows.

My thoughts: I love the rich history of this story! I have read a few books about Egyptology and the disputes surrounding some of the treasure that has been unearthed over the years. The history is interesting to read about, so I enjoyed reading a historical fiction story along the same vein. I enjoyed that this story had so much going on, with mystery surrounding the treasure that Edmund Price has. I appreciated that some things are wrapped up nicely with this book, but that there will be more adventures with the next one in the series, which I look forward too.

I received this book from Bethany House. This is my honest review.

Line of Fire

Line of Fire JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Line of Fire by Taylor S. Newport, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Line of Fire

Title: Line of Fire
Series: Dauntless Defenders #1
Author: Taylor S Newport
Publisher:
Independently Published
Release Date: November 7, 2024
Genre:
Christian Action Thriller

The enemy is relentless, but they made one fatal mistake: they underestimated him.

Australian mercenary Tyler Reid, known as "The Ghost of OZ," has a talent for evading detection, a skill that has caught the eye of multiple government agencies. When a shadowy group targets a CIA asset and her revolutionary drug ND1, the Deputy Director calls in Tyler. Eager for action, Tyler takes the job. He soon realizes that the enemy is not only after the drug, but also out for his blood. Then the mission goes south, and he is forced to seek an unlikely ally.

For covert foreign operative Alexandra Romanova, freedom is a distant dream. Escaping one prison only led her to a more dangerous one. Her deadly skills are at her boss's disposal, but she’ll use them only to escape. Her final chance hinges on retrieving ND1, but the elusive Ghost of Oz complicates things. Tyler Reid isn’t an easy mark, and the better she gets to know him, the more she questions the mission she's tasked with. Soon she faces a dire choice: kill a man she is convinced is good, or pay with her own life.

As Tyler and Alex venture beyond their orders, the line between enemy and ally blurs. On the edge of failure, trust becomes a dangerous gamble with every decision dragging them deeper into the line of fire. As enemies close in and alliances shift, they are ensnared in a ruthless battle where survival depends on split-second choices. In this high-stakes fight, time is running out, and the margin for error is zero.

Line of Fire is the first book in the Christian thriller series Dauntless Defenders. It is NOT a standalone novel.

My thoughts: This story was hard to put down once I started it, since I just had to know what was going to happen to Tyler and Alex! I love that there is so much going on, with a lot of things happening, and that I wasn't sure who could be trusted. The author does a wonderful job of writing a fast paced story with a lot going on that kept me engrossed until the very end. Like the synopsis says, this is not a stand alone book. I was left wishing that the next in the series were already out!

An Honorable Deception

In the trying art of balancing investigations and love, a detective must determine his priorities when faced with dangerous circumstances that could threaten everything he holds dear.

As the leader of the Imposters, an elite private investigative firm, Lord Yates Fairfax has made an art of concealing his identity. But when his newest client, the beautiful Lady Alethia Barremore, is shot while leaving their meeting, he throws caution to the wind and rushes to her aid. Though Lady Alethia thought she was only looking for her missing former nanny, she has clearly stumbled upon something much more dangerous.

Lady Lavinia Hemming suspects her longtime friends hold more secrets than they're willing to admit, and when she stumbles upon the truth that they're the esteemed Imposters, she recruits herself into the firm. While she is happy for the distraction of an investigation, Lavinia's own family secrets continue to haunt her. And the one thing bringing laughter back into her life--her friendship with Yates--lands her squarely on the disagreeable side of her best friend: his sister.

Tormented by a past she doesn't dare voice aloud, Lady Alethia does what she can to help her handsome host, her new friends, and the investigators. But as clues lead them deeper into the dark side of society, Alethia, Yates, and Lavinia learn anew that the gentry isn't always noble . . . even as they fight to hold fast to their own honor.

My thoughts: I have read almost all of Roseanna M. White's books, and loved every one of them. I think that the Imposters are my favorite, since I love the way they took a common problem (among the nobility) of being stuck with a title and land but not having the funds to run the estate. In the third book, Yates gets his chance to shine. I love that the story keeps us guessing whom will win his heart, the childhood crush or the damsel in distress? I also thought that they mystery of who is trying to harm Lady Alethia was well done. Roseanna M. White does a wonderful job of writing about difficult subjects, bringing them to light, but also having a message of hope. I also love the cameo that some of her previous characters (from other series!) put in during the course of this story. I can't recommend this book enough! I would suggest that the books are read in order.

I received this book from the publisher through Just Read. This is my honest review.
