Cornered

Prepare for three times the thrills with these nail-biting page-turners from your favorite romantic suspense authors!

In In the Dark by Lynette Eason, accountant Steph Cross is cleaning out a coworker's desk after her untimely death when she finds cryptic notes that lead her to believe her friend's car accident was no accident at all. Detective Tate Cooper is determined to help her crack the case before someone else gets hurt. But can he protect the woman who has so quickly laid claim to his heart?

In Downfall by Lynn H. Blackburn, chef Cassie Quinn gets an offer she can't refuse: to fill in as chef at an exclusive mountain resort. But when the kitchen is destroyed and it becomes clear Cassie is in danger, she's forced to accept the help of her ex-boyfriend, Detective Donovan Bledsoe, to find the culprit and keep her safe.

In Perilous Obsession by Natalie Walters, teacher Lahela Young becomes the target of someone with a twisted obsession of righting a wrong. The first person she turns to is her good friend Briggs Turner. Briggs may have left his career as a police officer, but he still has the instinct to protect—especially for Lahela.

I enjoyed these three novellas! While I like stories that are longer, as a general rule, I thought that each of the authors did a fabulous job of keeping the suspense and energy going with these stories! I loved getting to know the characters and trying to figure out who is behind each of the mysteries. I liked how this book had a variety, from the sudden (and suspicious) death of a co-worker, to vandalism and secrets, to someone's unhealthy obsession. This is the perfect collection of mysteries to pick up and enjoy as the weather turns cold! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.

As Ahinoam's heart grapples for footing, King Saul's army closes in, and Ahinoam must confront the true meaning of love, loyalty, and courage. Is she brave enough to trust new friends and love Israel's next king?

"The Old Testament stories of David come to vibrant life in Brave. . . . Wonderful!" -Angela Hunt, Christy Award-winning author of The Emissaries

My thoughts: Mesu Andrew's does a good job of taking what we know about Ahinoam and Abigail, King David's wilderness wives, and writing a fictional story about them. I didn't realize some of the other writings that are out there about King David and his family, which was interesting to learn. While I don't like the whole "sister wives" thing (which I didn't really think about before picking this book up), I still found the story interesting. I can only imagine how messy King David's life gets as he adds more wives in. This is a well written, thought provoking story to pick up and enjoy!

About the Book

Escape to Whispering Creek

Title: Escape to Whispering Creek
Author:
Barbara M. Britton
Publisher:
White Rose Publishing
Release Date:
September 27, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Emma Uranova enjoys her office job until her boss disappears with the investors' money. To avoid the media storm and false accusations, Emma flees to Whispering Creek, Tennessee to live on her best friend' s secluded property. When a temporary position opens up in Nashville, Emma leaves small-town anonymity to pad her depleted bank account. With a handsome new boss and a steady income, Emma believes life is looking up... until she discovers she has transported the scandal in her backpack. Where is God when her life is falling apart?

Wade Donoven is recuperating from a crash that sidelined him from the family electrical business. Worse yet, his prodigal younger brother is getting the glory for Wade' s accomplishments. Desperation, and physical setbacks, have him agreeing to let Emma help him manage the business office. But when trouble follows her to his doorstep, Wade must make some difficult choices. Sending Emma back to Whispering Creek may unknowingly place the woman he's come to love in danger.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this cozy mystery! I loved the small town setting in Whispering Creek, since I have a soft spot for small towns. I could only imagine what it would be like to be in Emma's shoes, when her former boss took off with her savings and that of some of their clients. She needs a safe place to land. Even though Wade is bitter about a recent injury sidelining him, it winds up giving him a chance to get to know Emma and perhaps help her unravel the mystery surrounding her former bosses.

I enjoyed this well written story and the character development! I look forward to returning to Whispering Creek with the Christmas theme story.

The Immortal Abyss

Book: Immortal Abyss (Duology Book 2)

Author: Katherine Briggs

Genre: YA Fantasy

Release date: September 17, 2024

Seize the throne. Seek the legend and conquer the Abyss.

Nations rise and fall in the aftermath of war over the Eternity Gate. The corrupted desert throne stands empty, and the Immortal Abyss awakens. Drought ravages the continent, and people long for the rebirth of a starpalm, who will rise from among mortals and end their judgment.

Orphaned at birth, Tol grew up hiding in the farthest corners of the desert, training under powerful rebel fire wielders. She now dedicates her life to the Rebellion’s cause to seize the throne and Abyss from the surviving dynasty and deliver both to the coming deity.

Chosen as the Rebellion’s messenger, she travels to reach sympathizers capable of identifying the starpalm. Familiar figures haunt her dreams, and her path twists with every step she takes. Can Tol fulfill her purpose and summon a legend? Or will her country perish under the judgment of the twin gates?

My thoughts: While I enjoyed the first book in this duology, this one wound up being my favorite! I enjoyed how everything came together in the story and that we had the chance to visit one of the other lands and see things through the eyes of a different character.

My heart went out to Tol as she gave her all to help fulfil an ancient prophecy and aid a rebellion. I thought that the author did a wonderful job with the world building and adding more to what we discovered in the first book. I also loved the surprising twists and turns! This is an excellent story to pick up and enjoy! Just, be sure to read the series in order.

I received this book from Celebrate Lit. This is my honest review.

More from Katherine

Hello friend!

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t overcome something difficult in your life? Maybe it was a bad habit you wanted to outgrow, a closed door you wished to open, or a choice you needed to make.

Within God’s will, Jesus in Matthew 19:26 says, “With God, all things are possible.” (ESV)

This is why I wrote The Immortal Abyss. Like you, I have felt stuck in my limitations and circumstances. My protagonist Tol, an orphan, strives to carve a new life for herself by joining a rebellion and bringing reform to her corrupted country. But how can she serve her cause if she can’t overcome her weakness in her fire gifting?

Like Tol, we can’t rise above challenges alone. So, what do we do?

  • Ask God for help and thank Him for promising to never abandon us.
  • Seek friends who will reciprocate spurring one another on to persevere.
  • Remain focused on our purpose.

If you’re looking for an adventure fantasy that will encourage you to never give up on what is good, please enjoy The Immortal Abyss, sequel to The Eternity Gate and conclusion to The Threshold Duology.

Cheers to journeying across forbidden lands, meeting new friends, taming dragons, and overcoming the impossible!

~ Katherine Briggs

P.S. If this encouraged you, please join my story newsletter by visiting my website. As a welcome gift, you also will receive my science fiction and fantasy short story collection, Experiments and Enchantment.

Welcome to the Blog Tour for The Sign of the Calico Quartz audiobook by Jan Drexler, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

The Sign of the Calico Quartz audiobook

Title: The Sign of the Calico Quartz
Series: The Sweetbrier Inn Mysteries
Author:
Jan Drexler
Narrator:
Gillian Wiggin
Publisher:
Swift Wings Press
Audiobook Release Date:
July 24, 2024
Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Solving a murder is easy, right? All you need to do is follow the clues, and they will lead you to the culprit.

At least that’s what Emma Blackwood thought before she and her cat, Tim, came to the Black Hills to work in Aunt Rose’s Sweetbrier Inn. Before she found a dead body in her living room. Before the hunky Deputy Sheriff accused her of murdering the poor guy. And before the real killer put her name on their list of victims.

For this fan of Agatha Christie and a plethora of television crime dramas, it’s an intriguing situation that demands her skills. Investigating might not be as simple as it looks in fictional mysteries, but Emma’s organized mind and OCD tendencies start making sense of the clues…until she finds a second body with no apparent connection to the first.

Sifting through evidence is easier with the help of her new friend, Becky, who provides baked goods for the inn, and Aunt Rose is always willing to take time from writing her mysterious memoirs to give support and advice. Wil, the inn’s chef, moves things along with a barbed comment or two, and Tim the cat and Rose’s corgi, Thatcher, make themselves available for fuzz therapy and to point the way to another clue.

The list of suspects grows as Emma learns more about the inn’s guests and their reasons for visiting the Black Hills. From the honeymoon couple to Mysterious Montgomery, to the famous reality show ghost hunter, to the gold seekers, no one is the person they appear to be. Even Rose’s good friend Clara is hiding secrets in her pink chenille bathrobe.

But as Emma pursues the investigation, things start to get personal. Can she identify the murderer before disaster strikes?

My thoughts: I love a good, cozy mystery, especially this time of year! I enjoyed getting to know Emma and her aunt Rose, as they work together in the Bed and Breakfast and then have their cozy hamlet threatened by a murder. Emma has clearly been framed for it, with the victim having been found in her room, and it will take some work to figure out who would go to such lengths.
I enjoyed the setting, since my family lived in the Black Hills when I was little. I also loved the variety of characters in the story. It's fun that the author had such a motley crew of guests at the end, with their being several of Emma's friends, as well as a ghost hunter. I can't wait to see where the rest of this series goes!

I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
