About the Book

Title: These Long Shadows
Series:
On Victory's Wings #3
Author:

Publisher:
Independently Published
Release Date:

Genre:
Historical Romance WWII

How do they rebuild a marriage that wasn’t real in the first place?

London, 1945: Two years ago, Jonty Ables married Katie Baines to save her and her unborn baby from shame. But now the war is all but over, the baby is gone and they must work out where their shaky marriage fits into lives irrevocably changed by war.

Clinging to the memory of a time before all happiness evaporated, Katie works hard during the day as a seamstress. At night she comes home to a tiny terrace on a bomb-scarred street, crammed with her extended family and their problems. Years of estrangement sit between her and her recently demobilized husband. She’s not even sure she loves him, so why is she so crushed that he calls out another woman’s name in his sleep?

Jonty is determined to honor the vows he made no matter how many ghosts now plague him, but with such separate lives his wife is more of a stranger than ever. When Katie’s friend goes missing, Jonty seizes the opportunity to help her find him just so they have a reason to talk. But the war casts long shadows over their efforts, and fighting for their future might just be the hardest battle of them all.

If you love epic wartime romance with a dash of intrigue, you’ll love this second-chance, marriage-of-convenience love story.

My thoughts: While I didn’t read the previous books in this series, I’m thinking I may need to go back and read them now, since I found Katie and Jonty’s story to be well written and a powerful one.

When Katie finds herself pregnant and alone, her friend, Jonty, proposes marriage to help her out in her difficult situation. When he comes home from the war, they must figure out how they are going to move forward.

This story was an incredible one that deals with some hard themes, but I thought that the author handled them with grace and had a wonderful message woven throughout the story. While marriage of convenience is a trope I have read several stories in, this book was like any other I’ve read! I highly recommended picking it up.

I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.

Falling for the Devoted Cowgirl

They’ve secretly loved each other for years. He’s hung up on their age gap. She can’t get him to see her as the woman she’s become. Will they let go of their fear to find true love?

When former pro bull rider, Adan Franco, discovers he’s been named the guardian of a twelve-year-old boy, his world turns upside down. He must head to New Mexico to settle the estate. As he fumbles through his new status as a single dad, he leans on the woman he’s secretly loved for years.

Solana Vargas is desperate for Adan to see her as something other than his best friend’s kid cousin. At twenty-five, she’s matured into a devoted friend and loyal member of the Vargas clan. If only Adan could come to see her as wife material, all her dreams could come true.

Will helping him settle into life as a single dad finally force him to see her in a new light? Will they ever take a chance on love together?

My thoughts: I jumped into this series with this book, so I didn't know the other Vargas family members stories, but this book worked as a stand alone.
I enjoyed getting to know Adan and Solana, who have been friends for years and are thrown together again when Adan becomes a single parent to a pre-teen he doesn't really know. I love how the characters must work together to get Jet settled in to his new life. This story does a wonderful job of pointing to Christ and living for Him. I look forward to reading more books by Karen Baney!

The Tiny Crown

What if you woke up to the life you'd always dreamed of? Lucinda is discontent. At 16, she faces problems at home, challenges at school, and an aching emptiness where romance should be. Surely, everything would be better in England, right? A sudden trip to the Land of Hope and Glory offers more than Cinda has ever hoped for--and maybe more than she bargained for.

My thoughts: As my daughter gets older and starts picking up more advanced reads, I have started reading fiction with the thought in the back of my head about whether or not the book would be a good read for her. This story fits the bill as being a good one for her to read in a few years! I appreciated the main character and her struggles with everyday life, thinking that being in a different position would make life better. This story has a wonderful message and the fun aspect of having the chance to step into another world that makes one appreciate their own. I look forward to reading more by the author!

Title: Anything: A Romance for Jesus Freaks
Series: Mayberry University Series #1
Author:
Kristina Welch
Publisher:
Independently Published
Release Date: February 1, 2025
Genre:
Christian YA Romance

Two guarded hearts.
He’s breaking down walls and she’s building them higher

A match made in Heaven, or a blueprint for disaster?

After the fiery downward spiral of senior year, Kit Talbot crash-lands on a quirky college campus where traditions rule and dorm floors act more like family. It’s just weird enough to keep her mind off the wreckage she’s leaving behind.

Enter Levi Whitaker, known as the swooniest guy on campus. Magnetic, confident, and far too much like the ex who sent her life into that PTSD-tainted nosedive. Levi seems to be everywhere, focused on her like she’s the only girl in the world—even indulging her sugar addiction with delivered treats. But Kit’s self-preservation instincts are sharper than ever, and she deflects him like Wonder Woman blocking bullets.

That is, until Levi’s quiet faith and humble apology start to break down Kit’s defenses. He loves Jesus in the dreamiest way, looks like wow, and ... somehow triggers the flashbacks she fights so hard to avoid. Every minute with him is a risk she isn’t sure she should take. Should she protect them both from the chaos of her life or learn a bravery that feels irresponsible?

As Kit fights to keep her life safe and manageable, she leans into her faith, clinging to the Bible verses God whispers to her heart. Clearly, he’s up to something, but the healing she prays for isn’t happening the way she wants.

Why is God silent on the prayer she needs most?

My thoughts: Kit has been through a difficult experience that left her struggling to adapt to living on a college campus and being around guys who remind her of her ex. I love her quiet faith and how she leans on Jesus through the difficult season of her life. The small college campus that she is on is fun and quirky. I enjoyed getting to know her friends as well! I thought that this was a delightful story that reminded me, somewhat, of being college age and my group of friends at that time. This is a wonderful start to the series and I look forward to reading more about the characters!

The Scarlet Ribbon

The Scarlet Ribbon is a Revolutionary War re-telling of the story of Rahab, which is an interesting blend of stories. I thought that the author did a great job of bringing to life the historical time period and the battle for Stony Point, one that I didn't know a lot about when I started the story. My heart broke for Rebekah, since her circumstances left her to turn to prostitution to earn a living during the Revolutionary War. The story doesn't shy away from the horrible situation some women found themselves in back then, though it also handles it tastefully and doesn't give details. I would recommend this story for young adults and adults but won't let my daughter read it until she is much older.

This story has a beautiful message of redemption.

I received this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.

When Heaven Thunders

WHEN THE DEVIL WEARS BLUE AND GRAY, DOING THE RIGHT THING CAN BE A THORNY MATTER.His family is missing. Bushwhackers are sleeping in his bed. This war just got a heap more personal for Union Sergeant Fin Dabney.

Fighting guerillas in your own neck of the woods comes at a high price. Neighbors, kin, and even Fin’s best friend are on the wrong end of a rifle. But not all battles are fought amid smoke and blood. When Fin faces a murderer from his past, flesh and spirit collide, but only one can prevail.

Melinda Jane has waited a lifetime for Fin to declare his intentions. But now she has moved on to other interests—with disastrous results. Her choices have cost her Fin’s love and possibly her life.

Why was it he could draw down on the enemy and look death in the eye, but he could not bring himself to deal plainly with Melinda Jane? He never told her how he feels. Now he may never get the chance.

My thoughts: I enjoyed returning to this series and seeing where the war takes the Dabney family. I also really like that Fin and Melinda Jane have know each other for a long time, and she is like a part of the family already when Fin tries to decide how to be honest about his feelings having grown into something more than thinking of her as a sister. I have a soft spot for stories with that sort of romance.
I've read a lot of books set during the Civil War, but this series is quickly becoming a favorite, since the author covers some different aspects of the time period. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Seer of the Wildwood

She might be his prize, but she can see things he can’t, like a future together.

Marya Santelyn, pampered daughter of the Merchant’s Guild, hides a secret. A power stirs within her, one that could destroy everything she holds dear, or save it. When her ability to see the future becomes too apparent for comfort, the spunky Marya takes matters into her own hands and runs, right into the arms of the enemy.

Tam Randene, warrior of the ancient race that makes the mysterious wildwood their home, never expected one of his tribe’s sworn enemies to request his aid to escape her pursuers, but he swiftly recognizes Marya’s value. The land of Alyna hasn’t had a seer in generations. The man who protects her would have a powerful ally, and the man who wins her heart could well rule all.

Captive among his tribe, Marya begins to learn how to embrace her gift even as she begins to feel far too at home with Tam’s rambunctious family. As her visions become increasingly more dire, she and Tam realize that danger is coming to Alyna, danger that will require her people and his to band together to survive. Can she convince her people to listen, or will they tear her from Tam’s arms? Because her heart tells her something her visions never could: Nothing is more important than being together.

If you like closed door, swoon-worthy fantasy romance—featuring intelligent, determined heroines and untameable, honorable heroes; dual points of view (hers and his); and a happily-ever-after with ongoing world conflict—in a land designed to sweep you away, grab this series starter perfect for fans of Kenley Davidson, K.M. Shea, JA Andrews, and Tara Grayce.

My thoughts: I enjoyed reading this fantasy style story! Marya has a secret. She blacks out and sees visions, though she never remembers them when she wakes up and she is afraid that her so called gift will define her future and keep her locked away. But, secrets have a funny way of coming to the light, and hers does so at the most inconvenient time. When she becomes a captive, she has the opportunity to embrace her gift and learn to use it.

This story is wonderful! I enjoyed the characters, each of which are well written. The world was spectacular and I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Genre:
Christian YA Fiction

No one gets me at all, except for Hester. And she’s not even real. She’s a woman from the 1800s, but she totally understands what it’s like to hide love. So, she’d understand why hiding text messages is super important. But, since my dad became a Christian and all, I have to be super careful. But my parents are hiding things too, like why my mom is riding the struggle bus while she’s expecting my baby brother or why dad is talking to the other woman at the office.

My thoughts: I enjoyed reading this novella and the different perspectives that it provided! I could only imagine what it would be like to be in Candy's place, with her world changing. I love that the story is told through the POV of both Candy and her mom, Leslie, since then I got to know both of them. I look forward to reading more about this family and where the series takes them!

Faith Endures #2
Author:
Carrie Walker
Publisher:
Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date: February 5, 2025
Genre: Romantic Women's Fiction

Sometimes the love you need most looks different than you imagined.

Clare Martin thought nothing of agreeing to live with her dementia-ridden grandmother when her parents left on mission. Balancing that with her job as a social worker and the expectations of her career-driven boyfriend proved doable—until Grandma started a house fire.

Mason Hughes has loved Clare for years, but the time was never right to tell her and now she’s dating someone else, fixing Mason firmly in the friend zone. He’s working to be a pediatric neurologist, a dream inspired by a special boy with a terminal brain condition and must choose a medical school. Finances are so tight he’s forced to consider a program across the country, a troubling fact he’s kept secret.

Lucia Roberts, a seventeen-year-old on Clare’s caseload, loses her foster home and is placed in an unwelcoming group home. At every turn she’s met with rejection and becomes desperate for any proof she has value—enough to make choices that could affect the rest of her life.

When Grandma Dottie and Lucia's paths take a dangerous turn, Clare frantically tries to save them. As their lives knit together, will they find the love that’s right before their eyes?

My thoughts: I love that this story has so much going on in it! Sometimes contemporary novels don't have enough going on to keep me interested, but that was not the case with this story! It helps to read Emma's Hero first, since some of the characters showed up there first.
I love that Mason and Clare have known one another for so long and that he has carried a torch for her, despite things not lining up for them. Both characters are wonderful, with Mason's gentle, caring heart and Clare's love for the children she works with and her grandma.
The secondary characters are great as well, and I enjoyed getting to know them!
This is a wonderful story to pick up and enjoy! I look forward to reading more by Carrie Walker.

Betsy St. Amant
Publisher: Sunrise Publishing

February 4, 2025
Genre:
Contemporary Southern Romance

From beloved author Betsy St. Amant comes a enemies to more, Hatfields and McCoys swoon-worthy contemporary romance set in a small beach town that reminds us that true love is worth fighting for.

Noah Hebert recently inherited the Blue Pirogue Inn—along with all its problems. He needs money to keep his beloved childhood home from being shut down by his family’s longtime nemesis, Isaac Bergeron. So when Noah’s lawyer approaches him about an additional segment of his late grandfather’s will, it’s just in the nick of time. But even from beyond the grave, his grandfather is up to his usual games. In order to receive the last portion of inheritance, Noah must follow the clues. But there’s one condition…

Magnolia Blossom Cafe manager Elisa Bergeron is shocked to discover an acquaintance from the local Puzzlers Club left her something in his will—and even more surprised to discover they are clues to a portion of his estate. When she learns she must work with introverted inn-owner Noah Hebert to solve the puzzle, she’s torn. Growing up in the middle of a multi-generational feud between their families, she’s been taught by her father Isaac that Heberts can’t be trusted.

When these two exes must work together to save their future, will love get a second chance or will the longstanding family feud claim another generation?

My thoughts: I love stories where there is an old house restoration project going on, since it is something that I can relate to. I loved going along with Noah and struggles to remodel the inheritance that his grandfather left him, even when all seemed to be going wrong. It was a fun twist to the story that he has to work at solving puzzles with his former love to get the remainder of his inheritance. The clues are fun to try and solve along with Noah and Elisa! This is a delightful story and I look forward to returning to Magnolia Bay in the future/

The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine

A shattered heart, a fate foretold. The world undone by tales of old.

Emlyn DuLaine just wants to know what happened to her sister, Camille, seven years ago on the fateful day she vanished—literally. Emlyn witnessed Camille unravel and disappear, but no one believes her. Since they think she's crazy, the least the cops could do is solve Camille's case. Is a little closure too much to ask?

But Emlyn's life is upended when she is pulled through a portal into the fantasyland of her childhood imaginings—a magical library holding the storyworlds of every story ever published. And trouble is brewing in the land of Rivenlea. Rogue characters threaten their plot lines, and broken classics are beginning to crumble, but Emlyn only wants to find Camille.

As she searches for her sister, Emlyn begins to learn the reality of Rivenlea and her own origins. A nefarious plot is afoot, and the line between fact and fiction is becoming hopelessly blurred. The truth threatens the storyworlds, Rivenlea, and Earth—the fabric of creation, itself.

My thoughts: This story was such a fun, unique one! I could only imagine what it would be like to grow up with seeing your sister disappear in a most unusual way and having no one believe in you. I loved the aspect of Emlyn coming face to face with the world, characters, and creatures that she had written about as a child. Rivenlea is an interesting world, where books come to life and each unique gift plays a part in keeping the stories flowing smoothly. I loved the nod to The Wizard of Oz, even though it is a classic that I didn't know as much about going in (other than having seen the movie). This is a wonderful story for all ages to pick up and enjoy!

Release Date:

Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Desperate to avoid the turmoil that now engulfs her, Dee would do anything for a chance to turn back time. Wracked with regret and paralyzed by fear, she is forced to hide halfway across the world, all in a bid to safeguard the one person she holds most dear. If only she could undo the past and prevent this disastrous situation from ever unfolding.

After waiting five long years, Luke thought he was finally making progress in his relationship with Dee. But just as she begins to open up and trust him, she suddenly vanishes, leaving him bewildered and determined to uncover the truth behind her sudden disappearance.

My thoughts: Dee has made some decisions she isn't proud of that leave her tethered to a relationship when she needs to start anew. When things finally start to look up, something happens that has her running from one of the few good things in her life.

I loved the message of faith and forgiveness in this story! I think that most of us will see a part of ourselves in Dee's story, as she struggles with the things that have separated her from God. I thought that the author did a wonderful job of weaving this story of suspense and love together! I look forward to reading more of Anne Gibson's stories!

Finding Juniper JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Finding Juniper by Cindy Thomson, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Finding Juniper

Title: Finding Juniper
Author:
Cindy Thomson
Publisher:
Emerald Path Press
Release Date: January 2, 2025
Genre: Christian Fiction, Historical Fiction

For Patrick Doyle, the claim that time heals all wounds is a cruel lie.

In 1920, returning from WWI, Paddy finds Ireland creeping toward civil war. Invisible borders separate people, including Paddy and his pregnant girlfriend. With few prospects, Paddy sails to America. However, America is far from the land of opportunity he’d hoped for. And worse, his girl refuses to follow him because of her political involvement.

Thirty years later, Patrick has moved on with his life, building a new family. A letter arrives, suggesting the child he’d assumed died may be alive. Patrick’s American daughter Mardell pushes him to find out what happened to her sister, named Juniper. Patrick anxiously sails to Ireland.

Juniper endured a childhood in institutions, and when she’s released, she moves on without the parents who left her. Operating an apothecary out of an inherited cottage where villagers are slow to trust outsiders, Juniper finally finds a home when her grandmother arrives. Just as she feels comfortable and content, her father shows up at her door, bringing shocking news about her mother.

Finding Juniper invites readers on a journey of confronting the past, healing from old traumas, and redefining what family truly means.

My thoughts: I thought that the history in this story was fascinating! Having been to Ireland, and being Irish myself, I enjoy reading books about their tumultuous past. It was interesting to read about Paddy coming home from WWI to find his country on the verge of a rebellion. I felt bad for his girlfriend, even though she chose to stay when she could have had a fresh start.
This is an interesting and unique story about the choices we made and the benefit of having hindsight. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, even though I didn't always like the choices they made.

Troll Princess Horra Fyd and young druid Rowan team up to reverse the evil Erlking’s spells and save the creatures across the Wilden Lands. However, Fairy Princess Glory Toppenbottom is still a thorn in Horra’s side. After Horra and Glory have a heated fight, Glory sneaks out of the castle. She is bent on finding the Erlking to reverse the hex he cast on her. This creates a political disaster when the Glory’s sister announces she’s coming to retrieve Glory.

Angered by Horra’s treatment of a royal guest, King Fyd proclaims Horra to be Queen Bearer. She becomes the ad hoc ruler, freeing her father from the scandal. Shocked, Horra assents. Her first move is to find the missing fairy princess before it becomes an interkingdom war. They form a search party and leave.

The Erlking stalks their every move. When the only choice points them toward the Riven, a cursed hidden land, they don’t hesitate. They find Glory is already there, but are immediately separated. The Riven is nothing like anyone imagined. Will they survive the Erlking’s magical traps, or will they, like everyone else, perish within its borders?

My thoughts: I have enjoyed this series, and was thrilled to get a copy of "Tatterhood" to read and review! It picks up where "Mossycoat" left off, with Horra and Rowan facing the fallout of Erkling's spells. When her father gives her a job that includes working together with the fairy queen, life gets even more complicated.
I am always looking for good books for my daughter to read that have a good lesson and are clean. I love that I have found that with this series! It would be an excellent series to add to a home or school library. I recommend reading the books in order.

I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
