Stranded on Sparrow

If His eye is on the sparrow, where does that leave her?

Lia Diaz’s life has become an illusion. Fired from her perfect job, she’s living a lie to avoid censure from her critical family. So when Lia gets a call about her nana’s recent fall, she heads to Nana’s house to help out and regroup.

Things are looking up until she discovers that her childhood refuge, Nana’s home on Sparrow Island, has been condemned in the wake of Hurricane Arley. Time to regroup—again.

After “rescuing” his niece and a motley crew of animals, some might say Zachary Nolan has a hero complex. Zachary never thought that he would live life as a single dad. However, as a web designer he is able to spend lots of time with Violet, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. A call for help when Lia gets stranded there sends him rushing to the rescue. That hero complex thing again.

A hero and his niece offer new hope to Lia—maybe God’s eye is on Sparrow Island after all.

My thoughts: When Lia finds herself unemployed, she heads to a safe place to care for her nana. I can relate to her feelings of insecurity as she discovers the bad shape that her nana's home is in and feels like anything that looks promising will only bring heartbreak. So, when Zachary and his niece come into her life, she finds it hard to believe they will be around for the long haul.

I enjoyed this sweet story of one young woman learning important lessons about God's love. The characters are wonderful and the setting is so much fun. I highly recommend picking up this book, as well as the series in general. Each book can be read as a stand alone.

When I first saw the beautiful purple shade of the cover for Stranded on Sparrow, I knew I wanted to dedicate the book to my older sister, Jenny. Purple is her favorite color and like the main character in my book, Jenny is a talented photographer. She has taken most of my author photos and also our family photos every year. She has a good eye for choosing the right lighting and pose to perfectly complement the people she’s photographing. When my youngest son was a toddler, no professional photographer could persuade him to smile for a picture, except Jenny.

Besides her photography, Jenny was a positive role model for me growing up. She taught me how to be independent, comfortable in my own skin, and willing to try new things. She was also the person who taught me how to do my makeup. Similar to Lia in my book, Jenny’s adventurous and spunky personality makes her a fun person to be with. Through funny movie quotes, inside jokes between us and much more, she always manages to make me laugh when we are together. I am blessed to have a big sister like her.

This book is also inspired by a verse from Mathew 10:29-31. The verse says, “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”

There is a song my mom used to sing at church when I was a child that still encourages me called, “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” It is comforting to know our Heavenly Father takes such good care of His creation and cares even more for us. Things will go wrong in life but we can have peace knowing God is in control and never abandons His children.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this story from several view points. It was interesting to go along with Cami as she reconnected with her cousin through remembering her grandma who left her with an interesting legacy to be a part of. Even though Cami is busy trying to make a name for herself in her field, she is on a time crunch to finish the shawl. I loved the journey she goes on to find out what is truly important.

The Traveling Prayer Shawl is actually a tribute to the wonderful women I’ve had the pleasure of making shawls with for the last ten plus years. We have a group that has remained faithful though some have had to leave, and new faces have joined. I thought this would be a book where there would be several points of view, sort of like how it is when we meet one Saturday per month. I even asked the girls when this idea began to churn if they could give me some character ideas.

Then one morning this scene came to me and wouldn’t leave. I wrote it out and sent it to my critique group. They thought I might be on to something.

Follow that with one of my prayer shawl girls asking if I was still interested in a character idea. Of course I said yes, and she handed me a fully fleshed out supporting character—Dericka.

I hadn’t planned on anything romantic but apparently my characters had other ideas. This story couldn’t get itself written fast enough.

The cherry on top was when another of my prayer shawl girls shared about a pattern her grandmother had designed that was published back in the 1960’s. With her permission, I include that pattern at the end of the book—an actual prayer shawl to crochet.

You will also see a prayer that is included with the shawl in the book. That is the same prayer that is given with each shawl from our Needles of Hope group. It was written by my dear friend, Pastor Lori Brown and used with her permission.

Crocheting is a relaxing craft for me and one I came to only a few years ago. My sweet grandmother tried to teach me to crochet, then gently suggested I stick with knitting. Ha! But my husband’s cousin came to visit and accepted the challenge, finally helping me to see what had been so elusive. Now I prefer it to knitting.

Though The Traveling Prayer Shawl is a stand-alone and not like my other books, I am currently working on another stand-alone split-time and have included the first chapter at the end of the book. Hope you will enjoy it and that you will try out my friend CeCe’s grandmother’s prayer shawl pattern.

Love Reunited

My thoughts: I didn't read the first two books in the series, which might have put me at a little bit of a disadvantage, but I felt like this story did fairly well as a stand alone since it focuses mainly on Elisabeth and Tyler.

Elizabeth is quiet about her past, the one that she left behind when she moved to Florida for college. When she runs into Tyler, their past relationship comes rushing back. Will they be able to forgive themselves and each other for the mistakes of the past to move forward? This is a wonderful story that deals with some heavy issues, but in the best possible way. I thought that the author did a wonderful job of writing a story of forgiveness.

My thoughts: I really appreciated Chuck Carr sharing his story, starting with being raised in a Christian home and marrying his sweetheart. I could relate to some of the struggles his family went through with Becca's diagnosis, since my sister in law went through a similar battle, one that she lost just over 4 years ago. My heart went out to Chuck and his family with the struggles they went through. This is an excellent book of one family's trials and triumphs that I highly recommend. I thought that the author did a wonderful job of weaving scripture and God's love into a difficult story and I appreciate the ministry that he has.

A Sprinkle in Time

It’s Alpenfest in Upper Sprocket! Yodelers are congregating in the square, tourists flocking to the town, and Trinidad Jones is scooping up some fall flavors at her Shimmy and Shake Shop.

The cherry on the sundae is her upcoming feature in Go West magazine. She’s determined to serve up the perfect interview, but it won’t be easy, thanks in part to her meddling Cuban grandfather Papa Luis who has decided to make Sprocket his home for the foreseeable future. Papa Luis has set himself up as a taxi driver in his classic 1951 Buick.

But things take a turn when Papa Luis tells her he’s found a corpse in his trunk. Upon closer investigation, they realize the body has disappeared. With the assistance of Juliette and Bonnie (her sisterhood of exes) and the way too handsome nut farmer Quinn Logan, Trinidad must solve the mystery of the disappearing corpse, before her father is up to his neck in a murderous mess.

My thoughts: Readers are invited back to Trinidad's Shimmy and Shake Shop to solve another mystery in her small town. When a body shows up in the back of her dad's taxi, she takes it upon herself to help solve what really happened leading up to it being put in there. As she unravels the clues, the story makes some unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed returning to Upper Sprocket with this story! I highly recommend picking up this fun story.

Who wouldn’t want to visit Upper Sprocket? Trinidad, Papa, Bonnie and Noodles along with other Sprocket residents are going to have their hands full as Alpenfest kicks off and gruesome items begin to pop up around town.
