Invest in Your Career
If your goal is to write the one book on your heart, then you should probably self-publish. Publishers are seeking career writers. Those who are willing to invest time, effort, and yes, even money, to improve their craft and promote themselves and their books. I’ve met a lot of authors throughout the years who were afraid to spend any money to improve their writing or build their platforms. But remember, anything in life takes time, effort, and oftentimes, money. I have literally seen people in tears because some free shiny object they signed up for in order to save a few dollars later turned out to be a disaster. Sometimes “free” costs too much. Become a better writer Writing is a skill. A craft. And it’s a craft that can be improved upon and developed. Many books have been written on the craft of writing. Set a goal of reading at least one such book per month. Do the exercises. Practice. Another great way to improve your writing skills is to attend classes, conferences, and take online courses. Learn from those with more experience than you. Study at the feet of a bestseller. Take a successful author to lunch, if you can. Subscribe to newsletters and blogs of successful authors in your genre. One of the most important things aspiring authors can do is read. Read. Read. Read. Don’t limit yourself to just the genre you wish to be published in. Read in a variety of genres. Read classics. Read new releases that have hit the bestseller list. Read past bestsellers. Great writers are voracious readers. Seek feedback. One thing that has baffled me throughout my years in the publishing industry is meeting a would-be author who has never requested feedback from his or her writing. Some think because they made good grades in high school English, they can write a bestseller. Successful authors are perpetual learners. To become successful yourself, study the craft, learn from the masters, read, and get feedback. You’ll be well on your way to growing a great writing career, and you will definitely win the heart of publishers!
