As Love Blooms
1913. Tessa Gregory has studied horticulture and wants to work for the St. Paul, Minnesota park system. Rejected by the superintendent because of her gender, Tess meets gardener Reese King, who sees Tessa’s designs and realizes he and Tessa can help each other. Tessa dresses like a boy, and the two create a garden with Tessa’s plans. Romance blooms between adventurous Tessa and grounded Reese. Meanwhile, Tessa’s widowed Aunt Sam begins dating an old friend, but the two are on opposite sides of the woman’s suffrage movement – can love overcome such a divide?
My thoughts: The early 1900's were an interesting time for women, as they struggled to find employment outside of the home and fought for the opportunity to vote. I love that this book is set in such a historically memorable time!
Tessa is a fun character who has plenty of spunk, which she needs in order to find a job in her chosen profession: horticulture. With her older sisters examples from the first and second Gregory Sister books (one is a lawyer and another a chef), Tessa finds her place in society, uncovering love and adventure along the way!
While this is the third book in the series, I found that you can still enjoy the book if you jump in here (which is what I did;)). There are references to her sisters stories, and they both play decent roles in this book, which is fun for readers who have read the whole series.
If you are looking for a fun, historical read, then check this book out!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
