The Warsaw Sisters

On a golden August morning in 1939, sisters Antonina and Helena DÄ…browska send their father off to defend Poland against the looming threat of German invasion. The next day, the first bombs fall on Warsaw, decimating their beloved city and shattering the world of their youth.

When Antonina's beloved Marek is forced behind ghetto walls along with the rest of Warsaw's Jewish population, Antonina turns her worry into action and becomes a key figure in a daring network of women risking their lives to shelter Jewish children. Helena finds herself drawn into the ranks of Poland's secret army, joining the fight to free her homeland from occupation. But the secrets both are forced to keep threaten to tear the sisters apart--and the cost of resistance proves greater than either ever imagined.

Shining a light on the oft-forgotten history of Poland during WWII and inspired by true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times,
The Warsaw Sisters is a richly rendered portrait of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of our deepest ties.

My thoughts: I have read a lot of books, both historical fiction and non fiction, about WWII and how hard Poland was hit. Despite having read a lot, I felt like this book gave me a new appreciation of the role that the Polish people played in the war. Especially those who resisted. I like that the story is told from both of the sister's points of view, giving it even more depth.
This story was a little hard for me to get into initially, but I'm glad I stuck with it, since it's a wonderful story of goodness in a dark hour of history.

I received this book from Revell. This is my honest review.

Never Hire A Hero

Never Hire a Hero JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Never Hire a Hero by Regina Scott, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Never Hire a Hero

Title: Never Hire a Hero
Series:
Fortune's Brides: Guarding Her Heart #3
Author:
Regina Scott
Publisher:
Edwards and Williams
Release Date:
December 11, 2023
Genre:
Sweet Regency Romance

Three children and a marriage of convenience may be his biggest challenge yet

A former elite soldier, Stephen Roth was trained to be ruthless as he served as bodyguard for kings and princes. So why would his English patroness, Lady Belfort, and her cat, Fortune, arrange for him to take a position as the tutor to the heir of Alldene Castle and the boy’s siblings? And why does the children’s mother, Lady Alldene, look at him with shining eyes, as if he could be some sort of hero? This was not the sort of challenge he bargained for!

A peer in her own right, Thea, Countess of Alldene, was raised in Alldene Castle and taught how to rule over it. But nothing prepared her for the death of her husband and the villainy of the man he appointed as guardian for her children. If a tutor with a razor-sharp gaze will prevent that man from taking her sons away from her, she’s willing to put up with Roth’s rough-shod ways.

But the castle holds a secret that may prove Thea’s undoing. When danger threatens, she turns to the one man who might be able to keep them all safe. Could a marriage of convenience over Christmas prove that heroes can turn up in the least likely places?

If you like warm, witty historical romances, with a touch of mystery, then you’ll love this historical romance by an award-winning, bestselling author.

“All readers who love Regency and historical romances need to pick up stories by Regina Scott. The author has never disappointed me. I am very happy to recommend any of her novels.” – Huntress Reviews

Hire yourself a hero, today.

My thoughts: I haven't read the previous stories, but it didn't stop me from enjoying this book! I look forward to going back and reading the first two books. I loved the premise, that there are several men who have been displaced due to the Napoleon wars and need a new career. Lady Belfort and her cat, Fortune, step in and help Stephen Roth find a job in England that suits him well. I loved the strength of character that he possesses, and how Thea recognizes that her boys needs someone to help guide them. I enjoyed the bit of mystery as well. This is a wonderful story, with excellent characters. I highly recommend picking it up!

Title: Home from the Storm
Series:
Johns Mill Amish Romance #4
Author:
Laurel Blount
Publisher:
Berkley
Release Date:
December 26, 2023
Genre: Inspirational Romance Amish

In this stirring Amish romance about love and second chances, a shunned man returns to protect the wife he left behind—and falls in love with the family he never knew he had.

After a senseless loss, hotheaded Caleb Hochstedler left his Amish faith and his young wife to seek justice. Two years later, he tracks his parents’ killer back home to Johns Mill, where he’s astonished to learn he’s the father of twins. Now he's determined to protect his children and the woman he still loves—if she’ll let him.

Her new husband’s abandonment broke Rhoda Lambright’s heart and proved her father, the bishop, right. Such a stubborn man could never be happy among the peaceful Amish. When Caleb unexpectedly returns, Rhoda is caught between her rock of a husband and a very hard place.

Her church forbids divorce and requires forgiveness, so Rhoda lets Caleb back into their home. But can she ever let him back into her heart? One thing’s for certain sure. This second chance will take all the faith they can find.

My thoughts: What an emotional roller coaster! I can only imagine what both characters are feeling, as they have been put in a tough situation by the murder of Caleb's parents, his search for justice, and his shunning. It would be hard to suddenly be on your own, as Rhoda is, when Caleb is shunned. The author does a wonderful job of writing a story full of mystery, suspense, and heart. The mystery that has been woven through the other books in the series is finally going to get some answers. I thought that this was a wonderful, well written mystery. I look forward to reading more by the author!

Lost Stones of Argonia #3
Author:
Dawn Shipman
Publisher:
Elk Lake
Release Date:
October 16, 2023
Genre: YA Fantasy (Clean)

“Adventurous quests, prophetic stones, and forbidden romance! Who could possibly ask for more?” —Lindsay A. Franklin, Carol Award–winning author of The Weaver Trilogy

She’s only seventeen—too young to die.

But the wizard, the ambitious king, and their marauding Borags must be stopped. Fulfilling the prophecy is the only way to defeat them, and after scouring Argonia for the missing gemstones, Lyric and her companions are just steps away from the final, crucial battle.

If they fail, the world they love will sink into a dark night of destruction.

If they fail, they will almost certainly die.

But Lyric is a king’s daughter, and long ago she chose this path. Terrified or not, she will see it to its end, because sometimes, sacrifice is the only way forward.

Dark magic, tragic loss, and tender romance abound in this gripping conclusion to the Lost Stones of Argonia trilogy.

My thoughts: Battle for the Crown is a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy about Princess Lyric and her band of friends. I enjoyed reading more about their quest, as it takes the reader through quite the journey! The author does a wonderful job with the fantasy style world. While this is a great YA series, it's a wonderful, engaging story for readers of all ages! It has a wonderful variety of characters, as well as a lot going on throughout the course of the story. I highly recommend picking it up!

Genre:
Romantic Suspense (Christian)

She is the only one who truly sees him.
Which makes her his greatest threat.

Black ops undercover agent Tane Temauri—code name Vapor—has made it his life’s mission to stay out of sight. Given the dangers inherent in his job, the last thing he can afford is to step into the open and become a target. Again.

Then a letter from a mysterious stranger changes everything. Although the letter was not meant for him, somehow, on a greater, cosmic scale, it feels as though it is.

But answering it will make Tane vulnerable.

Can he emerge from the shadows and risk everything for a woman he has never met?

If he does, more than his heart could be on the line.

So could his life.

And hers.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this story tremendously! There is so much suspense in the story, as Tane and Lia are thrown into an unusual situation. The author does a wonderful job writing a story filled with beautiful themes and interesting characters. There is a lot going on in this story, and it tackles some hard subjects, like trauma, but the author handles them with grace. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

Julia Monroe Begins Again

"A warm and witty tale that will grab you by the heart!"--DENISE HUNTER, bestselling author of the Riverbend Romance series

Samuel was back. It seemed unfair to be blindsided. And in church no less. Shouldn't there be a commandment about that? Thou shalt not step foot inside thy ex's place of worship.

Julia Monroe has just turned forty and has high hopes for a fresh start after the last decade of her life abruptly left her a young widow and a single mom. With both her boys off to college, she can finally focus on expanding her New Orleans-based cleaning business. Julia is ready for new beginnings--but God has other plans. Samuel Reed, the ruggedly handsome Green Beret who shattered her heart over twenty years ago, has returned to town and is the kind of distraction she never saw coming.

After their first interaction in years leaves her mind spinning and her emotions out of control, Julia knows she needs to avoid him if she wants any chance of preventing history from repeating itself, but her meddling best friend keeps throwing them together. And now it seems inevitable that the man who was hard to forget might just be
impossible to resist.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this debut novel tremendously! Julia is a fun character, with her snappy wit and inner monologue about how she really feels when her world is turned upside down with the re-appearance of her ex. I really enjoyed her as a character! The book isn't all comedy though, as it deals with some difficult subjects surrounding their breakup in college, her having been widowed, and how to trust someone again. I thought that the author did a phenomenal job of juggling the humor and seriousness. This is a wonderful debut story! I look forward to reading Rebekah Millet's next book!

A Gateway to Hope

Twenty-one-year-old Neka is a bit of an introvert, she also happens to be stunningly beautiful.

When she discovers her friend James is about to be dumped, she sees the perfect opportunity to escape from her quiet life. Can she summon the courage to leave it all behind?

James Copley comes from a ruthless family. It’s rubbed off.

Years ago, he disengaged from his brother’s smear campaign, but now his father has offered him an ultimatum, “Get married or lose your seat at the table.”

Plotting to stamp his design on the family business, he proposes to a woman, even though he doesn’t love her.

But his carefully laid plans start to unravel when she leaves him on the day she’s due to meet his family.

Could years of planning his comeback vanish with her departure?

A possible solution comes in an unexpected form: Neka. She’s not only a friend, but the daughter of his benefactor. And she’s right there, offering to support him.

But will her support stretch to marriage?

He attempts to win her over to his plan but collides with her powerful father who wants to leverage the situation for his own gain.

In their fight for survival and love, they are forced to face some uncomfortable truths.

Can they overcome thwarted dreams and missed chances to find true love, or does forcing destiny’s hand only lead to misery?

My thoughts: I enjoyed this story, since it had some unexpected twists to it. I love how focused on Jesus the story is, and how it showed that God can use some unique situations to bring about His plan. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, as they sought to help one another out and got to know one another more. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to be put in a marriage of convivence, though it happened all the time throughout history. So, it was interesting to read what it could be like in more modern times.
This is a wonderful debut novel, with strong characters and some beautiful Christian themes. I look forward to reading more by the author!

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for The Lord and the Lady Astronomer by Alissa Baxter, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours

About the Book

The Lord and the Lady Astronomer

Title: The Lord and the Lady Astronomer
Series:
The Grantham Girls #3
Author:
Alissa Baxter
Publisher:
Dragonblade Publishing
Release Date:
November 1, 2023
Genre:
Regency/Historical Romance (Sweet, wholesome)

Can wishing upon a star ever come true?

Abigail Grantham has always taken a keen interest in astronomy since her brother Sir John Grantham enlisted her aid as a young girl to keep records of his astronomical discoveries. Abigail is delighted when her uncle, Lord Longmore, invites her to stay at Longmore Hall in Buckinghamshire as he needs her assistance to compile a star chart.

When Abigail arrives at the Hall, her Aunt Longmore introduces her to local society. However, Abigail also spends a great deal of time in her uncle’s observatory, viewing the night skies alongside her uncle’s neighbor, fellow astronomer William, Viscount Rochvale.

Lord Rochvale is intrigued by Abigail, and when he discovers that they share an interest in ancient buildings and Roman history, he contrives to become better acquainted with her away from her uncle’s observatory, taking her to places of archaeological interest with a view to winning her heart. But the astronomical project they are working on makes courtship difficult, and William’s plans are further frustrated by his rakish cousin Gerald Burnby, who becomes a frequent visitor to Longmore Hall, seeking out Abigail too.

After a valuable Roman urn disappears from Longmore Hall, a series of mysterious occurrences unravel, presenting a puzzle Abigail has no idea how to solve. However, when events escalate into peril, Abigail discovers that it is the night sky that holds the secret to the missing urn—as well as to her stolen heart.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this story about the youngest Grantham sister using her love for the stars to help her uncle out. When that puts her in the pathway of both Lord Rochvale, who shares her love for the Celestial, and his flirtatious cousin, there are some misunderstandings and mishaps that occur. I enjoyed the twists to the story, and the added dash of mystery. The Midsummer's Night Dream like misunderstandings were a lot of fun! I also enjoyed the historical aspect of the story and learning more about astronomy back in the Regency era. This is a wonderful story (and series!) to pick up and enjoy.

I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.

But when Vivian fibs to her family that Josh is her boyfriend, their pretend relationship slowly evolves–while planning a Three Springs, Texas, gala together. She’s competing for a trophy that will secure their separate futures, but the real prize just might be finding love…at Christmas.

USA Today Bestselling Author

From Harlequin Heartwarming: Wholesome stories of love, compassion and belonging.

My thoughts: I enjoy reading stories like this one, where the couple start out fake dating. Both Vivian and Josh are hoping their working together for her to compete in a rodeo will get both their names out there. When Vivian tells a little lie that Josh is her boyfriend, the two of them embark on a fake relationship to save face. I enjoyed their chance to get to know one another better as they are thrown together. While this works as a stand alone novel, I would recommend reading the other books in the series, so the side characters and Three Springs, Texas setting is fully appreciated. The stories and romance are sweet and a delight to read!

Release Date:
October 24th, 2023
Genre: Inspirational Romance

Home for the holidays…

Or home for good?

Once upon a time, Ben Cooper left his hometown to follow his dreams of becoming a big-city doctor. Now he’s back to run his father’s clinic and spend Christmas with his daughter, not to fall for McKenzie Price, the woman who broke his heart. But when McKenzie steps in to help Ben reconnect with his little girl, and old sparks begin to ignite, will Ben give up city life for a second chance at love?

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

My thoughts:  This is the time of year to enjoy stories like this, with the main characters reconnecting after years spent apart. I thought it was interesting how the author has both characters dealing with their insecurities from high school. Ben has gone on to medical school and sought to show everyone who made his life miserable how wrong they were, while McKenzie seeks the safe road. I appreciated how the forgiveness is a big theme in this story!
It was fun to go along with the characters and enjoy them as they reconnected with one another. This is a sweet romance to pick up and enjoy during the holidays!
